6/10/10

WTF?! 3 years into retirement, Shush competed at the 1991 World Professional meet with a surprising display of difficulty. Dressed in a poofy blouse, she chucked a thomas (OOB) and Arabian 1 ¾ on FX in addition to a handspring front vault. She currently resides in St Petersburg. Fun facts: When she was younger, Elena liked to pick mushrooms with her family in Leningrad. More like magic mushrooms, considering the crazy skills she was throwing in the gym. “Viktor, I’ll do a full in dismount if you make that polka dotted rabbit on the end of the beam stop laughing at me! Oooh wait, the colors!” She’s also a (gasp) chainsmoker!

WTF?! Kinsey Rowe. She was coached by the Cypress twins, Deanna and Debbie, in the mid to late 90’s. Fun fact: Debbie was Head Coach for Oral Roberts University from 1978-1982. After Cypress dropped their elite program in ’98, Kinsey went on to have a very successful college career as a Georgia gymdog. Recently engaged, Kinsey lives in Dallas and is in her 3rd year of med school at UT Southwestern.

WTF?! SAA-LUTE! Hee Haw has hit Oklahoma! I was expecting Minnie Pearl to show up at any moment…oh wait she’s dead. Bart plays bluegrass guitar and sings backup on the Soggy Bottom Boys “I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow.” Not too shabby! Fun fact: While in elementary school, his coach made him walk to class on his hands. Via Bartgym

WTF?! I think Yuri would have won the 1988 Olympics AA, had he not blown out his knee in the ’86 Goodwill Games. He comes to mind when you think ROV (Risk, Originality, Virtuosity) in the old code. He tried a comeback the following year, but his injury proved to be too much and quietly retired. He later moved to the US and coached at "Gymnastics Learning Center" in Shrewsbury, Mass. He lived there with his wife and 2 sons (a third son had been killed in an automobile accident years earlier.) Sadly, he died of a sudden heart attack on May 10, 2006 at the age of 43.

Random non-gymnastics clip of the day. Buckwheat and Porky talk pickles.
